Visualization of the Boeing 777

We had the opportunity to work with two systems for visualization of the Boeing, one that shows the entire Boeing at once while the other only shows specified sections. The results of this work can be seen below. We ran the Switch algorithm on a 900 MHz Intel Itanium processor with a Quadro4 900 XGL video card. This work is still in progress, and this webpage will be updated as more results are available.

Switch vs. Intel's Boeing demo

Here we desribe the different viewers used to render the dataset. With each renderer, we describe a couple of advantages and disadvantages of the system.

Switch:

The Switch algorithm and system was developed by the UNC Walkthru group. It utilizes graphics hardware and a multiresolution representation (based on HLODs) to traverse and view a universal scene graph of the model. Switch can be run either on a single PC with a GPU, or using 3 networked PC each with a GPU. More information about this system can be found on the Switch webpage.

Note:  The actual Switch algorithm requires 3 CPUs and 3 GPUs. However, all of the results shown below were ran on a single CPU/GPU version of Switch. Thus, the framerates shown are slower than the actual Switch would run at, and we require more pixels of error for somewhat interactive performance.

Intel:

This system was developed by Intel. More specific information was not known at time of writing this.

Boeing 777 Images from Switch

These images were taken from the Switch model viewer. Some of the slow framerates shown are due to a very low pixel of error, while some of it is due to performance issues with the drivers for the graphics card and OS. The resulting polygon throughput of these cards is less than that of other ones available.

This image is from a "small" portion of the model. It represents about 130 million polygons from various parts. The view is from the left side of the
plane.

This is essentially the same as the previous image, but with slightly brighter colors.

This is a view of the underside of the left wing. Like the previous two, it is not the complete model but a smaller portion. I think the green object is a piece which holds the engine, but unfortunately, the engine was not included in this portion of the model.

This is an image of a 130 million polygon portion of the Boeing 777. It shows several large components, but is clearly missing others as well.

This is a zoomed in view of the underbelly from the previous image. Again, this is only a 130 million polygon portion, which is why there is a large "hole" between the hull and the inner structure.

This view is from moving into the hole described in the previous image. The lattice is some of the inner structure and we're looking along it towards what seems like some sort of cargo area.

This shows some of the interior of the airplane. The purple objects are a couple of chairs, while the cyan parts are pieces of the planes inner structure.

This is another view of the underbelly, but viewed from beneath the nose. We're not quite sure what the conic looking object is. From what we can tell, it came with our version of the model.

Boeing 777 Movies (avis) from Switch

Movies taken from the Switch system will be linked here. The model demonstrated here has about 130 million polygons, and is represented with about 20-25 pixels of error. Movies of the full model will be added soon!

This is from the opening view of the Boeing with the Intel render. As you can see, they use a nice textured model which is quick and simple to render. This helps for a much more visually appealing view.

This is the underbelly of the Boeing model. Again, the textured objects make for a much nicer and possibly more meaningful representation of the data.

This shows one of the zoomed in features from Intel's demo. This is a close up of the details of the landing gear. Like the Switch version, this part was not textured. But, in this image you can see a small part of the Boeing silhouette that is left when in the detailed component view.
